The Vermont Historical Records Advisory Board (VHRAB) supports the identification, preservation, and use of Vermont records with continuing or historical value. A gubernatorially appointed board of volunteers, since 1977 VHRAB has helped bring $425,047 in National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) funds to Vermont to assist the state's repositories and archivists. The Board is chaired by the Vermont State Archivist.
The Board encourages and reviews grants from Vermont to the NHPRC. VHRAB recommends that applicants contact Gregory Sanford (gsanford@sec.state.vt.us) about their proposals and submit their draft applications to Gregory six weeks before the NHPRC deadline to allow the Board an opportunity to do a review prior to formal submittal. These grants and other activities are shaped by VHRAB's strategic plan and priorities that are developed and refined with input from Vermont records curators.
Within the limits of its resources VHRAB, in addition to working with the NHPRC, seeks to:
- to help Vermonters obtain the knowledge and resources necessary to identify, preserve, and make historical records available for use by present and future generations;
- to facilitate cooperation and communication among the historical records repositories and information agencies within Vermont;
- to enhance understanding of the Vermont experience through the use of historical records.
