Biography of Secretary of State Deb Markowitz

Secretary of State Deb Markowitz was born in Tarrytown, New York on September 14, 1961. She graduated with honors from the University of Vermont in 1983. Deb earned her juris doctorate degree from the Georgetown University Law Center in 1987, where she graduated magna cum laude.

Deb Markowitz was elected Secretary of State in Novermber, 1998. Deb was the founding director of the Vermont League of Cities and Towns' Municipal Law Center, where she served from 1990 until 1997. Deb
has been an adjunct faculty at Vermont Law School, teaching professional ethics, and from 1988 to 1990, she practiced law with the firm, Langrock, Sperry, Parker & Wool. From 1987-1988, Deb clerked with Justice Peck of the Vermont Supreme Court.

Secretary of State Deb Markowitz has lectured locally and nationally on issues related to municipal law and on ethics in government. Deb has published numerous academic papers, articles and practical handbooks on topics of municipal law and practice. She has served on numerous professional and community boards, and has sung with "Matrix," a Balkan women's chorus.

Deb lives in Montpelier with her husband and three children.
