The Secretary of States Office is the tool
shed of our democracy. Its the place citizens come for fast and accurate information
on everything from open meeting law to corporate records. The Secretary of State is the custodian of governmental paperwork. This office is responsible for the preparation and publication of the Acts and Resolves of the General Assembly. The Secretary also procures a copy of the House and Senate Journals and all laws and subsequent revisions. These documents are available for on-site inspection by the public during office hours. The State Archivist preserves and keeps accessible these governmental records. Certifications files on each Notary Public are also maintained. The Office of Professional Regulation handles the licensing, registration, and disciplinary procedures for over thirty occupations and professions. At the Corporations Division, domestic cooperate charters are issued. Trademarks and trade names are registered here and UCC Financing Statements are filed in this division. The Elections Division monitors election returns and campaign finance reports, assists moderators and prepares the ballots. This division also provides assistance to municipal clerks and other local officials as well as to members of the public on all aspect of municipal law and practice.
