STATE NAME: The name Vermont was derived from the French 'Verdes Montagnes' meaning "green mountain"
VERMONT'S FLAG: The State Flag consists of the State Coat of Arms against a blue background.
COAT OF ARMS:
The Coat of Arms consists of a buck's head which symbolizes the abundant wildlife in
Vermont.
There is a band of pine trees which stand for the Green Mountains.
The shield bears the Vermont landscape (mountains, pine tree, fields, grain, cow) and
below are crossed pine branches. The state motto is written on a red banner at the bottom.
The Coat of Arms was adopted in 1779,
12 years before Vermont became a state.

Capital: Montpelier became the state capital in 1805.
Government: 2 United States Senators (6 year terms), 1 United States Representative (2 year term)
State Government: General Assembly: Vermont House of Representatives has 150 members, Vermont Senate has 30 members. All terms are 2 years.
Elections: Freemen's Meeting or General and State elections are held the Tuesday after the first Monday in November (except special elections).The Governor's term is 2 years
