The Chief Investigator shall:
- Reivew complaints received by the Investigative Unit and assign or oversee the assignment of complaint priorities within 30 days of receipt according to Complaint Priority Guidelines.
- Forward to the Director any complaint which the Chief Investigator believes should be reviewed for screening.
- Request AGO involvement according to Guidelines for Complaint Referral to the Attorney General's Office.
- Assign an Investigator to any new complaint forwarded to the unit, considering expertise, performance and workload. When handing over an emergency status complaint, the Chief Investigator shall speak with the assigned Investigator to alert him or her of the complaint status.
- Act as a day-to-day resource for Investigators and Licensing Unit Administrators to resolve challenges in investigation.
- Ensure that two Investigators are assigned to an interview in sensitive situations, described by Guidelines for Investigation.
- Meet with individual Investigators to review cases at least twice a month, making suggestions and directing as needed to assure thorough and well-conducted investigations. Offer alternative methods of conducting an investigation and act on investigative issues raised by Investigators.
- When assigning to an Investigator or reviewing a case, provide supervision as needed to ensure that the key focus of the complaint is clear, that the required documents needed are identified, and that the critical questions to ask are clear.
- Hold meetings with the Investigative Unit at least twice a month (more frequently if necessary), reviewing policy and issues needing attention.
- Review and approve or request revision on completed investigative reports, ensuring that reports are prepared according to Guidelines for Documenting Investigative Work Product, and with the understanding that the Chief Investigator's signature indicates that the report has met those standards and also reflects the standards of Guidelines for Investigation.
- Provide reports and case and procedural consultation to the Director as requested.
