        WALTER E. FREED        


WALTER E. FREED of Dorset, Bennington County, Republican, was born in Providence, Rhode Island on August 13, 1951 and has been a resident of Dorset since 1979. Occupation: President of Apollo Industries, Inc., a multi-state petroleum marketer. He is a graduate of Granville High School, Granville, New York and Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire where he majored in Economics. He is married to Margery Tyler Freed, and they have three children. Past and present public service includes: Vermont Chamber of Commerce, board of directors; Southern Vermont Art Center, board of directors; Park-McCullough House, board of directors; Long Trail School, board of directors; Manchester Little League, board of directors; Vermont Family Court guardian-ad-litem. He has previously served as chair of the Dorset school board and as a director of the Bennington-Rutland Supervisory Union. He is a former chair of the Vermont Republican Party and was a Republican National Convention delegate in 1992 and 1996. Member of the House: 1993-94, (Municipal Corporations Committee); 1995-96 (Local Government Committee, Rules Committee); 1997-98 (Fish, Wildlife, and Water Resources Committee, Rules Committee, Joint Rules Committee), 1999-2000. In 1993 he was elected chair of the freshmen Republican caucus; House Republican whip, 1995-96. He has served as the House Minority Leader since 1997. Home phone: 362-2775.
