There will be a statewide Primary Election on TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 1998 to vote for the following candidates in the Republican, Democratic, and Vermont Grassroots Parties:

- CHECKLIST POSTED: By August 9. Make sure your name is on it.
- If your name is not on it, REGISTER TO VOTE:
- When: No later than 12:00 noon on Saturday, August 29.
- Where: Town Clerk's Office, DMV offices, DSW offices, WIC offices, DAD office
- SECRET PARTY CHOICE: You do not register by party in Vermont. You don't have to tell anyone which party you favor.
- ABSENTEE BALLOTS:
- When: By September 7, apply no later than 5:00 p.m. or close of clerk's office if for self, and no later than 12:00 if on behalf of another person.
- Where: Town Clerk's Office
- How: Either in person, in writing or by telephone.
- Who: Voter or family member may apply all three ways above; other authorized person may apply for voter in person or in writing.
- Ways of Voting Absentee:
- Vote in town clerk's office before the deadline.
- Have ballot mailed to you, and mail or take it back to clerk's office before election day or to polling place before 7:00 p.m. on election day.
- If sick or disabled, have two justices of the peace bring a ballot to you at your home on any of the eight days before the day of election.
- SAMPLE BALLOTS POSTED: Saturday, August 29.
DO NOT
- If your name was dropped from the checklist in error, explain the situation to your town clerk and ask that it be put back on.
- If the problem isn't cleared up to your satisfaction, have the town clerk, a select board member or other members of the board of civil authority call an immediate meeting of the members of the board who are present at the polls. They should investigate the problem and clear it up.
- If you are still not satisfied, you may appeal to a superior court judge, who will settle the matter that day. Call the Secretary of State's Office at 1-800-439-VOTE for more information.
- If you know voters who have physical disabilities, are visually impaired or can't read, let them know they may bring a friend or relative to help them vote.
- If you know voters who cannot get from the car into the polling place, let them know that a ballot may be brought to their car by two election officials.
- Knowingly vote more than once, either in the same town or in different towns.
- Mislead the board of civil authority about your own or another person's eligibility to vote.
- Interfere with the progress of a voter to and from the polling place.
- Socialize in a manner that will disturb other voters.

Here is some basic information for you, the voter. If you have any questions after reading this poster, or at any time during the voting process, ask your town clerk or another election official.
- CHECK-IN
- Go to the entrance checklist table.
- Give your name, and if asked, your residence to the election official in a clear, audible voice.
- Wait until your name is repeated and checked off by the official.
- ENTER
- Enter within the guardrail, and do not leave until you have voted.
- An election official will hand you a three (3) part ballot.
- Go to a vacant booth.
- MARK YOUR BALLOT
In the Primary Election, you may vote for candidates of ONLY ONE PARTY, or your vote will not count.
- Make a cross (X) in the box to the right of the name of the candidate(s) you want to vote for.
- WRITE-IN. To vote for someone whose name is not printed on the ballot, use the blank "write-in" lines on the ballot.
- Separate all sections of your ballot on the perforations, and fold each section separately, making sure to remember which is the voted ballot and which are the two unvoted ballots.
- CHECK OUT
- Go to the exit checklist table.
- Give your name to the election official in a clear, audible voice.
- Wait until your name is repeated and checked off by the official.
- VOTE
- Hand the unvoted ballots to an election official who will deposit them in the "Unvoted Ballots" ballotbox.
- Deposit your voted ballot yourself in the "Voted Ballots" box.
- LEAVE
Leave the voting area by passing outside the guardrail.
