     NANCY I. CHARD    


NANCY I. CHARD of Brattleboro, Windham County, Democrat, was born in Point Pleasant, New Jersey on July 14, 1933 and became a resident of present town in 1966. Occupation: director, Vermont State Colleges Southern Vermont Education Center. She was educated in elementary schools in Point Pleasant and Roselle, New Jersey and graduated from Abraham Clark High School, Roselle, New Jersey. She attended Upsala College in East Orange, New Jersey (B.A., 1955; M.A., 1959), and HERS Institute of Wellesley College. She is married to Dr. John T. Chard, and they have one daughter, two sons, and three grandchildren. Member of: Southeast Vermont Community Action, board of trustees; Grace Cottage Hospital, trustee; National Order of Women Legislators, president-elect; Winston Prouty Center, trustee; Austine School, trustee; Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, board of trustees; American Association of Higher Education; Brattleboro Town Meeting Representative; Organization of American Historians; Brooks Memorial Library Board, former president; BUHS Board of Directors; Vermont Council of UVM; Vermont Community Foundation, former trustee.      PETER SHUMLIN


     

PETER SHUMLIN of Putney, Windham County, Democrat, was born in Brattleboro, Vermont on March 24, 1956 and became a resident of present town in 1979. Occupation: educator. He was educated in elementary schools in Putney, Vermont; graduated from Buxton School, Williamstown, Massachusetts; Wesleyan University, Middletown, Connecticut (B.A., 1979). He is married to Deborah Holway Shumlin, and they have two daughters, Olivia and Rebecca. Member of: Board of Selectmen, chair for six years; Landmark College, Putney, Vermont, board of trustees; Buxton School, Williamstown, Massachusetts, board of trustees; Putney Democratic committee, treasurer; Windham County Democratic committee, treasurer. He has served on: Windham Regional Commission; Putney Grammar School, board of trustees; Yellow Barn Music Festival; Putney Family Services. He is one of the founders of the River Valley Playhouse and Arts Center in Putney. Member of the House: 1990 (seated January 3, 1990), 1991-92. Member of the Senate: 1993-94, 1995-96, 1997-98.
